Campus Radio: Campus Beats

Campus radio (also known as college radio, university radio or student radio) is a type of radio station that is managed and run entirely by the students of the college, university or other educational institution. Programming may be exclusively by students, or may include programmes from the wider community in which the radio station is based.

Campus radio gives a platform to the young talented students who wish to be RJs in the future. It gives the students the basic understanding of how different radio programmes are composed and how they are being presented with sound modulations. The aim of campus radio is to broadcast educational programmes.
Campus radio station carries a variety of programming including news, sports often relating to the campus, news bulletin, radio quizzes, games, talk show, song dedications, promos, fillers, film reviews and so on. Often campus radio is best described as a free forum with lots of creativity and independence.

Although the term campus radio implies full-power AM or FM transmission over the air, many radio stations experiment with low-power broadcasting, closed circuit or carrier current systems, often only to on-campus listeners. Our campus radio differs significantly in the formats from licensed traditional campus radio.

Unlike other campus radio stations, our campus radio, “Campus Beats” is solely dependent on the PA system for transmission, since we have sound system installed in all the class rooms of the college which would eventually give a far reach out to the whole campus.

The very inspiration of having a campus radio is originated from the well equipped PA system of the college.

Campus Beats
The Empire English of Nirmala College is in the path of innovation. As part of the curriculum of the final year students, they have come up with a Campus Radio for Nirmala College.

A campus radio named “Campus Beats” was officially launched on 11th July by the Principal of the College, Prof. N. Joy. It was a dream becoming reality for Nirmala College and especially for the department of Communicative English. It is an initiative from 3rd year communicative students, to make the campus more vibrant and active.

Coordinator of Communicative English, Nibu Thomson, invited other departments to make use of Campus Radio for their departmental announcements if they have anything for the whole campus and they can come up with their own radio programmes to inform, educate and entertain the students of the campus.

Campus Beats is scheduled to be aired on everyday from 1.30 to 1.45pm, to make the lunch break yummy.

Objectives of Campus Radio
The rationale of having a campus radio is to set up a virtual radio broadcasting by using PA system as a tool for creating a rich and meaningful campus environment.
